Illustration Project #5 - Portrait / Caricature

Our next illustration assignment is a portrait commissioned by Rolling Stone magazine of a living or dead, well-known sports person, entertainer, writer or artist. The accomplished person must be someone who creates and/or is known for achieving something at a cultural level. For example, you might choose to create a portrait of President Trump as shown on this cover of Rolling Stone.

Most often, covers for Rolling Stone are photographs of celebrities, nut the magazine will hire an illustrator when they want an “interpretive” image or a “caricature” of a person that would be difficult to achieve using a camera. The illustrated portrait is also usually tied to an editorial and/or article written about that person, as shown below:

PROJECT 5a
- phase I:

The first phase of this assignment is to choose a living or dead, well-known sports person, entertainer, writer, or artist.

Then write a creative brief for this editorial portrait assignment.

Next create two image research boards:
- Include photos and scrap of your chosen person, and
- At least three examples of professionally illustrated portraits/caricatures of any person from
  three different points-of-view:
  • humor / satire
  • cute / childlike
  • realistic / exaggerated

Be sure to have these things posted on your blog by the BEGINNING of class
Thursday, November 21st.

- phase II:

The next phase of this assignment is to create a minimum of three portrait sketches of your chosen subject from the same points-of-view as your researched portraits:
• humor / satire
• cute / childlike
• realistic / exaggerated

We will work on the sketches in class. Please post your three sketches on your blog no later than the END OF CLASS of class on Thursday, November 21st.

- phase III:

The final phase of this assignment is to create the actual illustration for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. If you visit the web site of the magazine and download their media guide you will find the size of the magazine - 8 x 10.875.

While you will need to leave appropriate space in your illustration for the masthead, you are not required to add the masthead to your illustration. You may or may not want to add the obligatory cover snipes to final design. If you do so however, be sure you use a hi-res version of the publication's actual masthead, and that you follow Rolling Stone's typographic guidelines and grid.

As a side note, Rolling Stone magazine’s actual print resolution requirement is 100% size at 133 dpi. A rule of thumb is to set up your digital file actual size at twice (2X) the print resolution, or in this case 266 dpi, with 300 dpi the usual standard. The final digital file format required by this particular magazine to print the illustration is a PDF-1XA file, which is a hi-res pdf file calibrated to print on a high-speed four-color magazine (web) printing press.
You can use this size file if you wish to print your final illustration, but you will need to covert your final illustration to a smaller jpg format in order to post it to your student blog.

If you wish you can change your magazine to a more appropriate publication for your chosen personal. If you do, please follow the size and masthead parameters for that particular magazine.

A Tight Illustration Comp is due Tuesday, November 26th.

The Final Finished Illustration is due Tuesday, December 3rd.
Please put time and effort into this project to make it the strongest and best illustration you have created to date.
